Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

Lisa Muller, a high school teacher and a founding member of CYPRESS, was one of only eight educators in the United States chosen to go to California in 2003 to create the curriculum for Spielberg's Visual History Foundation Archives. Ms. Muller is a recipient of the prestigious Mandel Fellowship from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and has worked there as an educator.

Both the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Evansville have expressed great enthusiasm and support for the Archive and its educational programs. UE has decided to make attendance at CYPRESS' teacher workshop a requirement for graduation for all education majors.

In February of 2006, CYPRESS was proud to participate in another community collaborative effort, this time with the University of Evansville and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. University of Evansville's Institute for Global Enterprise brought in the poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the author of the poem, "Babi Yar." This poem was written to expose the slaughter of over 100,000 Jews at the hands of the Nazis outside of Kiev in 1941. CYPRESS board member, Sue Barancik, visited area schools to introduce the history of Babi Yar and the poem to students. Students were then invited to a special presentation by Yevtushenko at the University of Evansville. That weekend the Evansville Philharmonic presented a program of Dimitri Shostakovich including "Babi Yar" which Shostakovich set to music as part of his Thirteenth Symphony. CYPRESS was proud to underwrite student tickets to this performance.

In addition to the testimony compilations, CYPRESS is currently working on a project called, “Trunks for Teachers.” A trunk of materials for an entire classroom is available from the “Evansville Courier & Press” building for teachers to borrow. It includes books, curriculum materials, DVD’s, and other items so the teacher can present a complete unit to the class. The materials are geared to age different levels and focus on not only Holocaust education but other historic events and stories which promote respect for diversity.
